Policy Solutions to Increase Access to Affordable Childcare

The Mississippi Early Learning Alliance (MELA) and early care and education professionals recommend two key strategies to improve childcare in Mississippi:

  • Increase the supply of qualified early educators: This can be achieved by increasing teacher pay, potentially through wage supplements, to align with school-based prekindergarten teachers.
  • Reduce childcare costs for working families: This involves ensuring access to the Child Care Payment Program (CCPP) for those in need by removing barriers like child support enforcement requirements for single parents, and creating a refundable Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit for families who don’t qualify for CCPP.
